About Our Adult* Classes
Are you a curious hobbyist looking to get your hands dirty or a skilled maker looking to sharpen your skills? We’ve got a lineup of shop safety, intensive, skill and project-based classes and workshops taught by skilled makers and organizations to give you the know how to use the tools and technology to make all of the things.
We’re proud to partner with Sew Lab USA and the Community College of Baltimore County to offer some of our adult programs. We’re regularly adding new classes to the rotation, so keep this page bookmarked!

Anyone can take classes! Although some options are set to get members certified to use the shops, all classes are open to members and non-members alike.
Adult classes ages 16+: classes listed as ‘safety and certification’ must have guardian register and attend with young person.

Enrollment Policy: To have enough folks to run a class, Open Works must have at least 3 folks enrolled to run a class. Please sign up in advance through this site, by calling 410-862-0424 or stop in person. A member associate will be happy to help get you enrolled. Encourage a friend to take a class with you!
Class Cancellation Policy: Open Works has a 24-hour cancellation policy on classes- please let us know 24 hours beforehand if you can’t make it for a ticket reimbursement or class transfer.
Late Policy: Arrivals 20 minutes or more of the class start time will not be admitted into classes and registrations are non-transferrable.

Crash Course: InDesign covers graphic design for publishing basics with this section of the Creative Cloud. Crash Course: Adobe Photoshop covers graphic design basics using this image editing and designing software. Learn to alter and resize images to get them ready for print and web, and give yourself the foundation for the next steps of the Creative Cloud: Illustrator and InDesign.

Have you ever wanted to 3D Print something but didn’t know where to begin?
This crash course will lead you through the basics of using the 3D printers at Open Works, covering several methods of creating and downloading 3D models, methods for preparing files for printing and proper 3D Printer operation.
This class teaches the basics of MIG welding, focusing on how to move beyond sticking metal together and how to start getting even beads. It covers an introduction to metal alloys, material preparation, amperage, wire speed, and weld pattern. Get experience with various material thickness and weld joints. Come away with quick tips for strong and consistent welds.
Tools used: MIG welder, angle grinder, stationary sanders
Learn the basics of 3D modeling with Rhino 3D, a powerful CAD program used for creating 2D and 3D geometry for 3D printing, CNC milling, Laser cutting, product design, and more.
In this crash course, you will learn how to navigate the Rhino environment and create a basic digital 3D model from scratch!

Learn the basics of TIG welding for highly controllable welds, applicable to various types of metals. The classes uses mild steel, but the same general processes can be applied to stainless, bronze, and aluminum. This versatile welder can be learned by any skill level and is especially useful for aesthetic welds on anything from tiny projects to larger furniture.

Safety First: Certification and Safety Classes

CNC Plasma Cutter
Safety and Certification: CNC Plasma Cutter gives you a two-day run through of the CNC plasma cutter in the metal shop from file to machine, giving you the confidence to take the safety and certification and launch into CNC metal working at Open Works. The first sesion will cover Rhino 3D software basics and how to design for the CNC Plasma Cutter. Day two covers machine operation and technical trouble shooting when printing a file. Required before open shop access to the CNC plasma cutter.

CNC Embroidery Machine
Take your ideas, design and thread work to the next level by learning the basics of our computerized embroidery software and machine in this intensive safety and certification workshop. Required before open shop access.

Wood Shop Basics Certification and Safety
Required prior to taking any other woodworking classes and using the shop during open work hours, this course provides an overview of the woodshop and supplemental class offerings. It covers basic safety and how-to for several of the most user-friendly machines, as well as best practices for working in a community shop. This class is the first of two wood shop safety and certification courses that will get you checked off to use the majority of the woodshop including the table saw, miter saw, bandsaw, drill press, stationary sanders.

Required prior to using the sewing machines in the textiles shop during open work hours, this course provides an overview of the textiles shop and supplemental class offerings. It covers safety and how-to for using the sewing machines with hands-on instruction as well as best practices for working in a community shop.

CNC Safety and Certification
Do you have a project in mind that requires the precision of a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) Router, but are unsure of how to proceed? Are you curious about Open Works and interested in a group class? Here’s a perfect opportunity for you!
In partnership with CCBC, Open Works hosts Introduction to CNC Routing Safety and Certification classes!
This class focuses on the fundamentals of designing for the ShopBot CNC Router, often used in industry and art to carve and cut a variety of large material. Learn the basics of 2D Design software and 2.5D Cutting, and take your idea straight to the machine safely.
The instruction lasts approximately one hour with time for questions, and additional time to create and cut your design. Approved materials for this session include wood (up to 1” thick for cutting, up to 3” for engraving, 96×48” bed size).
Required prior to using the CNC machines in the digital fabrication shop during open work hours, this course provides an extensive overview of the CNC half of the digital fabrication shop as well as best practices for working in a community shop.

Laser Cutting Safety and Certification
Do you have a project in mind that requires a laser cutter, but are unsure of how to proceed? Are you curious about Open Works and interested in a group class? Here’s a perfect opportunity for you!
Introduction to Laser Cutting Safety and Certification focuses on the fundamentals of designing for 60w and 100w CO2 Lasers, commonly used in industry and art to engrave and cut a variety of material. Learn the basics of 2D Design software and take your idea straight to the machine safely.
Instruction lasts approximately one hour with time for questions, and additional time to create and cut your design. Approved materials for this session include wood (up to 1/4” thick for cutting, up to ½” for engraving, 24×36” bed size), Acrylic, and heavyweight paper such as cardstock.
Required prior to using the laser machines in the digital fabrication shop during open work hours, this course provides an overview of the laser cutting machines as well as best practices for working in a community shop.

Wood Shop Advanced: Jointer, Planer and Router Table Safety and Certification
This class is the second safety and certification offering in the wood shop and introduces the jointer, planer, and router table. It covers how each machine can help you prep wood for your projects and which order of operations will give you the best results. These tools are key for resurfacing and dimensioning rough sawn and reclaimed lumber into flat, smooth, and usable boards.
Completion of this intensive grants you access to use these machines during open work hours.
