Open Works Classes
Are you a curious hobbyist looking to get your hands dirty or a skilled maker looking to sharpen your skills? We’ve got a lineup of shop safety, skill and project-based classes and workshops taught by skilled makers and organizations to give you the know how to use the tools and technology to make all of the things!
Safety and Certification– mandatory before using certain shops and machinery and to give you a great base for making! 1 or 2 day options available in most shops. Single Day classes for fast track makers, 2-Day classes for intermediate or beginners who want more guided shop time.
Maker 101–Just getting started in the making world? These 4-week beginner courses cover shop safety, machine and material basics as well as guide you through projects from start to finish giving you confidence in using the shops and making on your own.
Crash Courses –cover hardware and software basics at shops and labs at Open Works to give you a great base for making. Not mandatory but a great overview or introduction. Single Day classes for fast track makers, some 2-Day options available for more guided shop time.
Make Your Own- project-based courses that give you the safety and shop basics and leave with a completed project to take home.
Next Level: Advanced- higher level courses for makers who have gone through safety and certification or crash courses and looking to expand their practice with more advanced techniques and machinery.
Make Night! is series of fun and social introductory workshops designed to get you grooving in the maker world.
Join us in our classrooms, BYOB or snacks and make with provided supplies. Bring a friend! Make a friend! Make things!
Anyone can take classes, although some options are set to get members certified to use the shops, all classes are open to members and non-members alike.
We’re proud to partner with Sew Lab USA and the Community College of Baltimore County to offer some of our adult programs. We’re regularly adding new classes to the rotation, so keep this page bookmarked!
Adult classes ages 16+: classes listed as ‘safety and certification’ must have guardian register and attend with young person.

Enrollment Policy: To have enough folks to run a class, Open Works must have at least 3 folks enrolled to run a class. Please sign up in advance through this site, by calling 410-862-0424 or stop in person. A member associate will be happy to help get you enrolled. Encourage a friend to take a class with you!
Class Cancellation Policy: Open Works has a 24-hour cancellation policy on classes- please let us know 24 hours beforehand if you can’t make it for a ticket reimbursement or class transfer.
Lateness Policy: Arrivals 20 minutes or more of the class start time will not be admitted into classes and registrations are non-transferrable.
